Winter Blog & Reflections on 2024

Back in 2023, which seems like an eternity now, I remember sitting down to write a post about the benefits of sourdough. We had just launched our website, which had a built-in blogging feature, and I thought, “Now, that’s handy!” I really enjoyed taking the time to write it and vowed I would try to publish one every month. Business updates, interesting developments in the baking world—so many topics on my mind. Unfortunately, it never happened. Not because I didn’t want to, but because I was all too often busy and, honestly speaking, simply overwhelmed by the never-ending task list of a small business owner.

Now that we’re in slowdown mode and have some breathing room, I feel like I do have a chance to sit and write again. Maybe I'll start with what's new around here for us at Leaven to Loaf...

Did you know that in January 2025, we turned 2!? That means we're a toddler now—full of energy, learning every day, sometimes making a mess, but growing stronger with each step. 2024 was a year of growth and expansion for us. We moved our baking operation from inside our home to a converted commercial kitchen space (aka our garage), and it was great in terms of having a dedicated and separate space for production. As we began to increase our volume, we faced several challenges trying to do it all on our own. I could not keep up with production, mixing, baking, and planning as a solo baker. Sure, my husband and partner was here to help with the IT and operational stuff, but it wasn’t enough—not to mention trying to keep up with our girls, house, and the craziness of life.

In the Fall of 2024, I made the decision to hire staff, and while that was nerve-wracking—mostly because it meant relinquishing some control—it honestly became one of the best decisions I made. We now have an incredible team that I’m extremely proud of and grateful for: Amelya, our assistant; Meg, our baker; and Art, our delivery driver. In no time at all, our little bakehouse has evolved. We are continuously in awe of the support and the community we have built around a common love for healthy bread and baked goods. Leaven to Loaf has become something so much more than a bakery, and has allowed us to form many wonderful relationships with customers and business partners alike. It's true what they say—food brings people together in the best ways.

Our next goal is a lofty one, but we hope to move our operation into a bigger production space. The hunt continues for the perfect location. In the meantime, there’s lots to look forward to in 2025:

Partnership With Children and Family Services of Grand Erie (CFSGE) Foundation

Those who know me personally are aware that before I started baking, I worked for over a decade as a social worker in the community. I supported many children and families over the years and, I often get asked if I miss being a social worker. While I can say I'm happiest doing what I am now, I do still miss being involved as a helper in the community. This is why the collaboration with CFSGE is something close to my heart. CFSGE supports children and families in our community in so many ways imaginable, but the need for support and donations is at an all-time high.

Over the next few months, you will see us sharing here and on our social media about some of the challenges they face while trying to help children, youth, and families. One of the biggest areas of need is foster parents. For many years, CFSGE has simply not had enough foster beds to place abandoned, abused or neglected children. They are urgently seeking applicants for foster parents, especially those who are able to care for youth. If you or someone you know may be interested in this role, you will be able to find the information listed at the bottom of this post or on our website.

“Loaves of Love” Fundraising Campaign for The Month of February

February is the month of families and love, and we felt there was no better way to show love to our community by helping those who need it the most. For the month of February, we will be donating $1 from every loaf sold. All funds will be donated to Child and Family Services of Grand Erie. We will also be accepting donations online.

We know we can rely on our customers and community to show up and support this important cause.

Hagersville’s 150th Anniversary 🎉

In 2025, Hagersville will celebrate its 150th anniversary since its incorporation in 1875. The town is planning a big celebration, including historical exhibits, parades, and community events. If you have some time, visit our local library and take a look through the archives that document our foundation and history. We are happy to share that we are a sponsor of the Hagersville 150 Celebration taking place on June 6, 2025. There are so many awesome events and plans in the works for that day. Save the date and mark your calendars! More details soon to follow.
